Google is looking to expand its footprint in India. It has acquired the multilingual app: “Where is My Train”, that displays live running status of Indian Railwayss trains and up-to-date schedules. The most interesting fact about this mobile application is that it can function offline without Internet or GPS. ‘Where is my Train’ is developed by Bengaluru-based startup- Sigmoid Labs. It is said to be one of the highest rated travel apps in India.
At present, this multilingual Android app is available in as many as 8 languages viz., English, Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu. The app can be used to spot train, check seat and coach arrangement, PNR status as well as live updates. The app claims 10 million registered users and, as the name suggests, it helps commuters track arrivals and departures as well as buying seats. That’s no small job, given that India is estimated to operate some 14,000 trains on a daily basis across the country.
There’s no official price for the deal, although India’s Economic Times is reporting that it is in the region of $30-$40 million. Sigmoid Labs, the company that develops the train app, was founded by four former TiVo executives in 2013. Economic Times reports that it has around 10 staff. It is unclear how much money it has raised to date. The company told customers news of the acquisition on its website earlier.
Google said that the Where is my Train team would “continue to build on the current offering,” so it seems that the app won’t be shuttered immediately, at least.
The service’s significant user base would suggest that Google might look to develop and expand its scope to perhaps touch on other areas. Ride-hailing apps, for example, have moved into adjacent spaces, including entertainment, payments and food delivery, to take advantage of their position as daily apps.
That’s all conjecture at this point. But it also stands to reason that Google could fold it into other apps, including Google Maps, although that certainly isn’t the plan at this point.
You may be wondering how you can track trains without internet using the ‘Where is My Train’ app, then here are the steps you need to follow:
- First of all, open the Where is My Train app and go to Language to choose your preferred language.
- The page will have three categories – Spot, PNR and Seats.
- Go to the Spot section. Under this, you can find trains between two stations, spot trains and can also check the live station updates.
- To check the current status of your train, enter your train number or your train name and submit.
- The app will display the live status of your train including arrival time as well as departure time.
- Moreover, before boarding the train you can also check the scheduled and expected time of arrival and departure by entering the station code or station name in the live station section.
- Also, you can check your PNR status by going to the PNR section and entering your PNR number.
- If you want to know about seat availability, go to the Seats section to enter the stations and the date of journey.
- Then choose your preferred class and quota from the drop-down menu and click on ‘Find Seat Availability’.
- It will direct you to Indian Railways Passenger Reservation Enquiry, where you can check on seat availability.
“Where is My Train” app competes with companies like RailYatri and iXigo that provide similar live updates.
The deal is also one of the most significant to date for a U.S.-based tech firm in India. Facebook, Twitter, Google and even yahoo have made acquisitions to build teams or acquire talent, but Where is my Train seems significantly more strategic as a product.
